Spicy Sugar Beans and Pap

  • 2 cups (400 g) dry sugar beans
  • 3 Tbsp. (45 ml) cooking oil
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 ml) Rajah Mild & Spicy Curry Powder
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) Robertsons Barbeque Spice
  • 3 curry leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 Knorrox Beef Stock Cube
  • 2 Tbsp. (30 ml) Knorr Hearty Beef Soup


  • Sort the sugar beans and soak in water overnight.
  • Boil in clean water for 1 hour or until soft and drain, keeping 1 cup of the boiling liquid aside for later.
  • In a pot, brown the onion in oil.
  • Add the Rajah Mild & Spicy Curry Powder and the Robertsons Barbecue Spice and fry for 2 minutes stirring continuously to release the flavour and aroma.
  • Add the boiled sugar beans, the cup of the liquid left over from boiling the beans and the Knorrox Beef Stock Cube.
  • Allow to simmer for 30-35 minutes until the liquid has been absorbed.
  • Just before the dish is done mix the Knorr Hearty Beef Soup with 4 tablespoons of water to make a smooth paste then stir it into the pot and simmer for a further 5 minutes to thicken.
  • Serve with pap.
