What is a Classic Sishebo?

9 April 2015

Before we talk about a “classic sishebo” it is fair to answer this question first, what is a sishebo? Some would say it is a tasty mixture of ingredients usually served to accompany dishes such as pap, ting, bogobe, samp, rice, bread. It can be anything from a tomato and onion mix, to stews and potjies. What describes a perfect sishebo in practical terms is when people roll up their pap or take a piece of steamed bread to dunk it to the sishebo.

Whether it was made of chicken, vegetables, mutton or beef, one thing for sure is Raja Curry Powder, Knorrox Stock Cubes, Knorrox Soup, Chicken Spice / Steak & Chops or even Barbecue Spice were all part of the ingredients. Ever imagine compiling a grocery list and not include the above mentioned ingredients? We grew up watching our parents use them in their cooking as a result they have become part of our heritage.

It’s going to be interesting to watch how the contestants do their interpretation of a classic sishebo. Will they be adding special ingredients to make their sishebos stand out?
