Mealie and Bean Soup

  • 1 cup (125 g) dry mealie kernels
  • 1 cup (175 g) sugar beans
  • 6 cups (1.5 L) water
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 ml) cooking oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 6 rashers bacon, diced
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) Robertsons Garlic Flakes
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 ml) Robertsons Mild & Spicy Curry Powder
  • 1 Knorrox Chicken Stock Cube
  • 1 Tbsp. (15 ml) Knorr Brown Onion Soup


  • Place the mealie kernels and sugar beans in a bowl of fresh water and allow to soak overnight.
  • Drain the beans after soaking and place in a large pot with four cups of the water and allow to simmer until soft.
  • In a pot, fry the onion in oil until soft then add the bacon and fry until crispy.
  • Add the Rajah Mild & Spicy Curry Powder and Robertsons Garlic Flakes and fry for one minute stirring continuously.
  • Add the boiled mealies and sugar beans with the water and the Knorrox Chicken Stock Cube and simmer until cooked.
  • Just before done mix the Knorr Brown Onion Soup with two tablespoons of water to make a smooth paste then add it to the soup and allow to simmer for two minutes stirring continuously until thickened.
